The cheaper rate, with strings attached

Self-drive is the lowest daily rate in powered access: £150 to £300 a day for machines covering 12 to 26 metres working height. In return, you run the machine. That means a valid IPAF PAL card covering the category, almost always 3b for booms, shown at booking, and it means you carry responsibility for the machine while it is in your care, including positioning, daily checks and safe operation.

For roofers, builders, decorators and tree teams already holding IPAF tickets, it is the obvious way to work: the machine is yours for the day or week, positioned exactly as you want it, at half the cost of an operated visit.

Trailer boom or self-propelled?

Trailer-mounted booms tow behind a suitable vehicle, set up quickly on outriggers, and reach 12 to 20 metres. They are the value choice for domestic work and tight driveways. Self-propelled booms are delivered by low-loader, drive under their own power, and reach 20 to 26 metres with more outreach and heavier platform capacity, the choice for commercial elevations and bigger repair jobs. What the hire company expects

A PAL card check at booking, a familiarisation run-through at handover, daily pre-use checks done by you (the checklist comes with the machine), and the machine returned or collected in the condition it left. Weekly hire is where the value sits

Day rates stack quickly on longer jobs. Weekly self-drive rates of £600 to £1,200 bring the effective daily cost down sharply, and for a full roofline refurbishment, a run of repointing, or a commercial cladding job, the week rate plus delivery is usually the right structure. If the job runs past a week, extension days are normally charged pro-rata, confirm the rate before you book.
